Menestrello: A free audio eBook reader for Android and iOS

Menestrello has been designed by Read Beyond primarily for reading reflowable EPUB 3 content with Media Overlays. It is a useful app for reading and listening to the pre-recorded audio in eBooks and it provides a synchronized presentation of text and audio for the readers.

This app should not be preferred to read text-only eBooks i.e. those books which do not have embedded audio in it.

Menestrello can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for devices running Android version 2.3.3 or above. This app is also available for free on the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad running iOS 6 and above. The app user interface is available in English, Italian, Danish, French, German, Polish, Spanish and Turkish.

On the iOS platform, Menestrello app is mostly accessible with the VoiceOver screen reader for visually impaired users. On Android, Talkback users may face few accessibility chalenges in using this app.

Features:

  • Sort titles in the Library by author, title, narrator, duration, language or recently opened
  • Preserve and reset reading positions
  • Adjust font size, background/font color, margins and line spacing
  • Includes many font choices including the OpenDyslexic font
  • Change playback speed: from 0.5x to 2.0x, with rate-vs-pitch correction. (Available in iOS and Android 4.1+.)
  • Auto scrolling of text during audio playback
  • Night mode: black-themed UI for reading at night

To add audio EPUB 3 books for reading on Android devices, download or copy them onto the device storage. It is recommended that you create a directory named menestrello in the root directory of the device storage and copy your EPUB 3 files into it. When Menestrello runs, it scans this directory and is able to quickly populate the app library with the available titles. The app also allows the user to browse the device memory and select directories where supported eBooks may be present.

To start reading in Menestrello on an iOS device download the EPUB 3 Audio-eBooks with Safari, and choose Open in... Menestrello. Alternatively, download the EPUB 3 files on your PC/Mac, and use iTunes to copy them onto your iPad or iPhone.

An introductory video explaining the user interface and features is available from Read Beyond. The help manual for Menestrello is also available online.
