DAISY training for trainers of diverse disabilities in South Africa

Report

The DAISY DTB Production Training for the representatives from diverse disability organizations in South Africa was convened by Shakila Maharaj and organized by DAISY for All project. Held at Convention Dynamics, Garden Court Johannesburg International Airport. The training course was focused on full text and full audio DAISY 2.02 DTB production using Microsoft Word Save as DAISY XML add-in, Pipeline and Sigtuna DAR 3.

27 participants from 20 organizations from across South Africa attended the training including the dyslexia, autism, intellectual disability, mental health and the blindness communities, the QuadPara Association of South Africa, the Deaf Community of South Africa. 6 participants were screen reader users and 2 were accompanied by care givers. Universities, the assistive technology industry, and the International Labour Organization (ILO) also participated. 2 sign language interpreters, 2 care givers, 2 volunteers and Microsoft South Africa supported the training. There were interviews from local radio and TV during the training including Deaf TV.
At the end of the training, participants created DAISY version of HIV/AIDS training manual created by South African disability organization.

Training

The training started with a presentation of the DAISY overview. Then, participants experienced playback of DAISY sample books with using free and open source playback softwares.

From 2nd day to 3rd day, during the hands-on session, training conducted in 2 separate rooms. In one room, training conducted with using screen reader and 6 screen reader user participated. In another room, 21 participants from diverse disability groups had training.

During the first hands-on session, participants created full text and TTS audio DAISY book by using save as DAISY Translator and Pipeline Narrator. Created Word file with heading and page styles. Saved as DAISY xml file and created DAISY 2.02 book with full text and TTS audio by using Pipeline Narrator.

At second hands-on session, participants created full text and human voice recording DAISY book by using save as DAISY Translator, Pipeline file set creation and SigtunaDAR3. Created Word file with heading and page styles. Created DAISY 2.02 file set by Pipeline. Opened DAISY 2.02 file set on SigtunaDAR3 and did recording and editing of the voice. During the training, all participants created a few books with TTS and human narration.

As software used during the training was very new and just released on 7th May during the training. There were problems regarding new software and different computers brought by participants. With active exchanges with the software developers during the training, problem solved by new updates of software and work-around.

On 4th day, all participants get together to start working on the final project, "Resource Manual for Disability and HIV/AIDS Training -United Against the Stigma of HIV and Disability" by Disabled People South Africa. A book divided into 13 sections. Each group of 2 or 3 participants completed each sections and at the end, combined all sections into one DAISY book.

The DAISY ToC Only Production Training in South Africa was organized by DAISY for All project and South African National Council for the Blind. Held at South African National Council for the Blind in Pretoria, South Africa. The training course was focused on ToC only DAISY 2.02 DTB production using MyStudioPC.

13 participants including 7 screen reader users from 8 organizations attended the training. Organizations are Aurthur Blaxall school for the Blind, Blind South Africa, South African National Council for the Blind, University of South Africa, Pioneer Braille Printers, Sensory Solutions, Madressa Noor School for the Blind and Disability Management Services.
