DAISY Course Report - India 2012

Hyderabad Eye Institute: DAISY Digital Talking Book Production Training
July 31 - August 4, 2012

Training was organized & hosted by Dr. PRK Prasad Centre for Rehabilitation of Blind and Visually Impaired, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, India.

This training was unique because for the first time a DAISY training was conducted for staff of an eye hospital. L.V. Prasad Eye Institute is one of the premier hospitals for eye treatment in India. It has perhaps the biggest and best Vision Rehabilitation department among all eye hospitals in India where a wide range of services are provided to people with visual impairments.

This rehabilitation centre decided to adopt DAISY format for creating accessible reading material and requested Mr. Dipendra Manocha, Developing Countries Coordinator, DAISY Consortium to arrange a training for their staff. Accordingly a training program was prepared and presented by Mr. Prashant Ranjan Verma, Consultant to the DAISY Consortium.

The training program was created to provide a holistic solution aimed at providing a better reading experience for the clients of the Institute. Thus all areas related to book production, distribution and playback were presented. The program concluded with a strategic discussion session in which a suitable production workflow, book distribution channel and players were selected for the Institute. The following broad topics were covered during the training:

Understanding DAISY and the advantages it provides; overview of other accessible formats
Software and hardware DAISY players
Production of DAISY audio books with structure in Obi
Use of Save as DAISY to create DAISY XML and full-text DAISY books with TTS voice
Use of Tobi to create human narrated full-text full-audio synchronized books
Issues relating to Mathematics, Science, images
Book distribution & storage
Troubleshooting
